House Foods Tofu Has Significantly Lower Environmental Impacts Compared to Beef and Chicken

House Foods America (HFA) commissioned a life cycle assessment (LCA) by Long Trail Sustainability, comparing the environmental impacts of our tofu with meat, using protein content for a fair comparison. The LCA revealed that HFA tofu (cradle-to-gate) has 85% to 96% lower environmental impacts than beef and 39% to 88% lower environmental impacts than chicken across various categories.

Value of US Soybean

We use 100% U.S. soybeans. The LCA study showed that HFA’s use of U.S. soybeans has a smaller environmental impact than the use of soybeans grown in Brazil, the world’s largest soybean producer. Since the study was produced, another LCA showed that the carbon footprint of US soybeans continues to improve due to sustainable practices such as no-till agriculture and decreased pesticide application.
